Discovery Center at Murfree Spring

Location: Murfreesboro, TN
Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Nashville Division

When the children’s interactive Discovery Center began searching for a larger facility, the City of Murfreesboro offered its old water treatment plant site, located near downtown Murfreesboro within 19 acres of high quality wetlands. Site improvements include outdoor classrooms and sampling stations, interpretive exhibits and elevated boardwalks through the wetlands to allow for nature study and wildlife observation. A new basin was created with a manmade wetland and stream to serve as a demonstration project for the aquatic food chain. The project also provides a trailhead for the City’s extensive greenway system. Equipment salvaged from the historic waterworks was integrated into the site design, old settlement ponds were retained and enhanced as water features and exotic plants were replaced with native plants to improve the wetland water quality. Trash separators were installed to prevent pollution form the City’s stormwater system from damaging the wetlands.

The project was awarded an Honor Award in 2003 from the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
