Morgan Falls Overlook Park
Location: Sandy Springs, Georgia
Client: Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department
Lose & Associates was selected to design a master plan for the redevelopment of portions of Sandy Springs’ Morgan Falls recreation area. Our firm held several public input meetings and worked with members of the on the designs for various areas of the park that related to their interests.
Subsequently, after internal city planning required an alternative plan, the city decided to move the park program to another riverfront site immediately upstream that provided better overlook opportunities. A new master plan and subsequent construction documents were developed. Included in the new site design are areas of pervious paving and native plant landscaping, a large pavilion, a river overlook with adult swings and shade structures, a stand-alone restroom, a community playground, an open lawn area, kayak storage buildings and a floating boat dock. Also included is the site of the original Powers Ferry Family cabin. Historically based architectural studies were performed (by staff from subconsultant Lord, Aeck & Sargent) to preserve and reinforce the cabin’s remaining stone chimney, and the site was designed to include historical interpretation along with its other park amenities.
This project won the state of Georgia’s top beautification award, the Keep Georgia Beautiful award, for the Community Improvement category in 2010.
