TDOT Roadscapes Program

Client: Tennessee Department of Transportation

TDOT Roadscapes Program – In 2005, Lose and Associates was selected by the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s Environmental Division to develop a new program titled Tennessee Roadscapes Program. The Roadscapes program was initiated to create a new vision for aesthetics, landscaping and roadside management along Tennessee’s state and federal roadway system. The initial phase of the project included conducting a statewide survey and public meetings to determine visual and maintenance preferences. Working with Shelton Communication of Knoxville, our staff facilitated the meetings and made a presentation of the survey findings. Lose & Associates has assisted with administration of the grant program and have provided technical assistance to grant recipients to navigate federal grant requirements.

Three subsequent project tasks were then developed. They included development of the Roadscapes Grant, Tennessee Groves and development of a new landscape design manual to be used by TDOT staff, contract designers working on roadway projects for TDOT and communities wishing to improve the roadside environment.

In 2007, the Roadscapes Program was selected by the Federal Highway Administration as one of eleven projects across the nation to receive the Environmental Excellence Award for resource management and maintenance of roadside environments. Our staff continues to work with TDOT on a variety of projects including a new initiative to develop more sustainable rest areas and welcome center prototype designs.
