The Church of the Good Shepherd
Location: Lookout Mountain, Tennessee
Client: The Church of the Good Shepherd
The site’s challenging slopes made accessibility difficult and contributed to drainage and erosion issues. Because the church site developed over time, various structures and spaces were arranged in an unrelated fashion, discouraging outdoor/indoor interaction. In order to meet these challenges, Lose landscape architects facilitated a series of input meetings with church members to produce the site master plan. In the resulting design, the various church structures were interconnected via a network of stairways and ramps leading to outdoor spaces of various sizes and uses. Challenging slopes were softened by redirecting access and terracing the site. Indoor/outdoor fellowship and Sunday school opportunities were strengthened by the development of several outdoor classroom environments. The project became looked upon as not only a playground, but a way for all ages to enjoy indoor/outdoor fellowship within the same space.
